Health Officials Raise Alarm Over Measles Cases
A serious health warning has been issued as an infectious measles patient touched down in New South Wales after being part of a rising outbreak in Western Australia. Residents of Sydney and surrounding areas are urged to be on high alert.
Exposure Locations and Precautionary Measures
NSW Health has identified key exposure sites where the infectious individual was present, particularly highlighting Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport (T2) between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM on Friday, September 12. Travelers on Virgin Australia flights VA572 from Perth to Sydney and VA505 to the Gold Coast are also cautioned to monitor their health closely.
Symptoms to Watch For
Dr. Valerie Delpech, Director of North Coast Public Health, stresses the importance of vigilance: symptoms such as fever, sore eyes, runny nose, and cough may develop, typically followed by a distinctive rash around three to four days later. Notably, these symptoms can take up to 18 days to appear, making it crucial for visitors to those specified locations to stay alert until October 3, 2025.
Measles Cases Continue to Rise in Queensland and WA
Queensland and Western Australia have faced their own severe outbreaks recently. In Far North Queensland, Cairns has reported six new cases linked to public areas, including hospitals, shopping centers, and dining establishments. As a preventive measure, Cairns Hospital is mandating masks for visitors and staff in various wards.
Origin of Current Outbreaks
The initial measles case in WA has been traced back to backpacker hostels and an arrival from Bali. Since then, another two cases in Perth have been confirmed, raising Western Australia's total this year to 35.
CDC Advises on Vaccinations
With measles being highly contagious, NSW Health encourages anyone experiencing symptoms or with inquiries about measles to consult their GP or Healthdirect at 1800 022 222. Vaccination remains the best protective measure, especially for those traveling overseas. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is available free for children at 12 and 18 months, and is recommended for all persons born after 1965 who haven't received two doses.
Stay Safe and Informed!
Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination, urging those unsure about their immunization status to get vaccinated before travel. The MMR vaccine is accessible at pharmacies for those over five years and at GPs for all ages.
