Windows 10 Security Updates Ending in October 2025

As October 2025 approaches, cybersecurity experts are sounding the alarm for Windows 10 users, urging an immediate upgrade to Windows 11 or a transition to Linux to dodge an impending 'security fiasco.' ESET, a prominent cybersecurity firm, warns that the outdated operating system, which has served users for nearly a decade, will no longer receive free security updates post-October 14, 2025.

Experts' Warnings

"It’s five minutes to twelve to avoid a security disaster for 2025," states Thorsten Urbanski, an ESET security expert. "We strongly encourage users to switch to Windows 11 right away or consider alternative operating systems if their hardware doesn’t support the latest Windows. The risks are too grave—cybercriminals are always on the lookout for vulnerabilities they can exploit, and outdated software is a prime target."

Market Statistics

Currently, around 32 million computers in Germany continue to run Windows 10, making up about 65% of home devices. In contrast, Windows 11 has only captured around 33% of this market, equating to approximately 16.5 million devices. StatCounter's data reveals a similar trend worldwide, with nearly 63% of Windows users still clinging to Windows 10, whereas Windows 11 users constitute about 34%.

Gaming Community's Shift

Interestingly, the gaming community showcases a different scenario. According to the Steam Hardware & Software Survey, as of late 2024, more than half of gamers—54.96%—are now utilizing Windows 11, illustrating the preference for the latest technology among those eager to maintain high performance in gaming.

Concerns for Business Users and Consumers

However, the situation looms darker for business users and everyday consumers, many of whom have not felt the pressing need to upgrade their older, still-functioning computers. This is particularly concerning when compared to the prior transition from Windows 7, where about 70% of users had already moved to Windows 10 before Windows 7 reached its support cut-off.

Cybercriminals Ready to Exploit

“The current landscape is more perilous than the previous transition from Windows 7,” Urbanski elaborates. "Cybercriminals are acutely aware of these statistics and are poised to take advantage of the vulnerabilities that arise once support ceases.”

TPM Hardware Requirements

Compounding the issue is the fact that many users are put off by missing features and performance concerns in Windows 11. The strict Trusted Platform Module (TPM) hardware requirement particularly excludes older devices from upgrading, frustrating users who find that their computers run Windows 10 seamlessly. Microsoft maintains that the TPM requirement is 'non-negotiable,' citing its critical role in enabling essential security features, including the secure storage of cryptographic keys and integration with systems like Secure Boot.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) Costs

For users unable to upgrade, Microsoft does offer Extended Security Updates (ESU) that businesses and consumers can purchase, but at a steep price. For three years of protection, businesses can expect to pay a staggering total of $427, a significant financial burden that could be better utilized elsewhere.

Call to Action

Ultimately, the message is clear: Windows 10 users must act swiftly to safeguard their devices and data. Waiting until the deadline could lead to exploitable vulnerabilities and severe data loss. The time to rethink your operating system is NOW! Don’t wait for the security crisis to strike—upgrade today and stay one step ahead of cyber threats.
