A Coffee Lover's Journey in Hong Kong
During my whirlwind visit to Hong Kong, I had the chance to explore two extraordinary cafés that completely transformed my coffee experience.
Discovering the Best Brew
I have to admit, when it comes to coffee, I'm a creature of habit. My go-to choices are often a cortado, flat white, or a traditional cappuccino—no sweeteners or flavored syrups allowed! However, my time in Hong Kong pushed me out of my comfort zone.
One notable spot was Uncle Ben Coffee, known for its daring creations. Located in a quaint space at Fu Lee Loy Mansion, this café, bustling with patrons, hinted at extraordinary offerings.
Uncle Ben Coffee: A Unique Mix
Address: Shop 7 G/F Fu Lee Loy Mansion, 9-27 King Wah Road, Fortress Hill, North Point, Hong Kong. Hours: Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM; Saturday to Sunday, 10:30 AM – 6:00 PM (Closed Mondays). At Uncle Ben, I dove into blend #212—a Finca Mocha Catuai Caturra bean from Honduras, infused with tantalizing notes of lychee, honey, brandy, and dark chocolate. My flat white surprisingly carried the essence of brandy and lychee, a bold experiment that I wouldn’t rush to reorder, but I’m glad I stepped outside my usual choices. My friend’s cappuccino boasted stunning latte art, showcasing the café’s dedication to craftsmanship.
The Hidden Treasure of Project C
Next up was Project C, a minimalist café that caught my eye. Address: 29 Hysan Ave, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Hours: Open daily from 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM. With its sleek, spartan design, Project C immediately impressed me. The menu was straightforward, yet I could tell that the coffee would not disappoint—and it didn’t! I opted for a Brazilian blend rich with dark chocolate and hazelnut flavors. Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed that coffee was served only in paper cups, but the quality was undeniable.
Project C made it a delightful experience by offering a tasting tray to help select the right bean—akin to a wine tasting experience!
A Coffee Oasis in Hong Kong’s Urban Landscape
While coffee isn’t always cheap in Hong Kong—expect to shell out at least $5 for a cup—Uncle Ben and Project C provide quality brews that are worth every penny. It's reassuring to see a global community of coffee enthusiasts dedicated to the craft of exceptional roasting. Hong Kong isn't just about the famous milk tea; it's a treasure trove for coffee lovers!
