HONG KONG, January 22, 2025

The much-anticipated Hong Kong Techathon+ 2025, co-organized by the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) and local universities, concluded with resounding success on January 19. This year, the annual event attracted a record-breaking participation of over 1,800 innovators from both local and international institutions, forming more than 380 dynamic teams eager to showcase their talents in the innovation and technology (I&T) sector.

Among these participants were over 100 international contestants, including teams hailing from mainland China, the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Macao, Australia, Portugal, and Brazil. These talented individuals traveled to Hong Kong to compete for prestigious accolades, including 10 Gold Awards and the coveted New Innovation Award. The competition was centered around four compelling themes: Trusted AI and Data Science, Sustainability and Environment, Social Governance (ESG), Digital Economy, and Smart Cities.

An outstanding moment came when the team "Eleuto," representing The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, garnered two honors: the Gold Award in the Sustainability and ESG category for local university students and the New Innovation Award. Their innovative project, a communication solution designed for individuals paralyzed and unable to speak or type, has the potential to transform lives and increase accessibility.

Empowering Global Innovators: A Gateway to Opportunities

This year's Techathon+ was made possible through the collaboration of HKSTP and an impressive roster of 13 local tertiary institutions. Among these were 10 returning universities, including the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, and the University of Hong Kong. Excitingly, three new institutes under the Vocational Training Council joined the event this year, expanding the scope of involvement and support.

In addition to local talent, the event partnered with 18 prestigious overseas institutions, ensuring a rich exchange of ideas and insights. With its increasing emphasis on nurturing global tech talent, the Hong Kong Techathon+ is positioning itself as a significant player in the international I&T arena.

As we look forward to the next edition, industry experts are buzzing with excitement over the potential breakthroughs and innovations that could arise from such a multidisciplinary and internationally diverse environment. Was this just a stepping stone to something even greater in Hong Kong’s tech future? Stay tuned!
