In a surprising revelation, Donald Trump suggested that Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch may play a significant role in the potential sale of TikTok in the United States.
During a Sunday interview on Fox News with Peter Doocy, Trump was asked about the ongoing negotiations for the Chinese-owned social media platform. Despite some confusion surrounding the deal's status, Trump stated that it's likely imminent.
The former president mentioned that tech moguls Larry Ellison and Michael Dell are already part of this deal, adding, "I hate to tell you this—Lachlan is involved. You know who Lachlan is? That’s a very unusual name, Lachlan Murdoch." He further speculated that Rupert would also join the investing team, describing them as "really great people" who love America.
Interestingly, reports suggest that while the Fox Corporation, owned by Rupert and led by Lachlan, might invest in TikTok, they are not expected to act as individual investors.
This announcement comes amidst a backdrop of legal tensions, as Trump recently took legal action against the Wall Street Journal, linked to claims regarding a crude poem he allegedly created for Jeffrey Epstein's birthday.
According to a 2024 law, TikTok, currently owned by Chinese company ByteDance, must be sold to a U.S. entity or face a ban in the country due to national security and privacy issues. Trump has previously challenged this law, extending deadlines for compliance multiple times.
With around 170 million users in the U.S., Trump suggested TikTok played a crucial role in his bid for reelection in 2024.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that six out of seven board members for the new company managing TikTok will be Americans, and data privacy will be handled by Oracle, Ellison's firm. This structure aims to ensure that U.S. authorities maintain control over TikTok's data and algorithms within the country.
