Travis Kelce Elevates Performance in Chiefs' Playoff Triumph Over Texans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs triumphed 23-14 against the Houston Texans in the divisional round of the playoffs, with tight end Travis Kelce stepping into the spotlight as “Playoff Trav.” Quarterback Patrick Mahomes lauded his teammate's ability to shine in critical moments, emphasizing that Kelce constantly makes big-time plays when it matters most.

“He doesn’t let the moment be bigger than what it is,” Mahomes said. “He just executes at a high level, and this time with an intensity that kicks it up a notch.”

In a standout performance, Kelce caught seven passes for 117 yards, including a crucial 11-yard touchdown reception from Mahomes in the fourth quarter. Kelce has consistently exceeded his regular-season average receiving yards during the playoffs since 2020, and against the Texans, he more than doubled his season average of 56 yards per game. Remarkably, Kelce admitted he doesn’t quite understand why he elevates his game in the postseason.

“I wish it was some type of switch or something like that that I just turned on in the playoffs,” he mused.

Having not played since the Chiefs clinched the AFC's top playoff seed with a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day, Kelce, at 35 years old, felt refreshed after over three weeks of rest. Mahomes noted that the break was beneficial for Kelce, considering the physically demanding position he plays.

“It helped Travis a ton just because he’s an older guy and plays a very tough position on the body,” Mahomes added. “He’s not just sitting on the couch—he’s working out and getting ready to go. That preparation shows when he’s out there.”

One of Kelce’s most significant contributions came from a remarkable 49-yard catch, showcasing his agility as he racked up 36 yards after the catch. His ability to evade defenders has become part of his playoff persona. In a nod to his younger days, Kelce acknowledged that earlier in his career, he may have turned that play into a touchdown.

Mahomes and Kelce connected for the quarterback’s 20th career playoff touchdown to Kelce, further solidifying their legendary partnership. What made this particular touchdown special was that Mahomes delivered the throw while falling under pressure, demonstrating his incredible improvisation skills.
