March 30, 2025 – In a heartbreaking turn of events, the Hong Kong music scene mourns the loss of beloved singer Lee Kwok-cheung, who passed away at the age of 60.
His friend and fellow artist Dominic Chow confirmed that Lee had been battling a serious throat condition that ultimately necessitated major surgery.
Rising Star in Music
Lee rose to fame after his standout performance in the 8th New Talent Singing Awards, marking the beginning of a promising career when he officially debuted in 1991 with his album “BLUE.” The lead single, “Blue Sha La La,” not only reached the top of the radio charts for two weeks but also earned him the prestigious “Best Male Singer” award at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation that same year.
Following the success of “Blue Sha La La,” his hit “A Lingering Love” solidified his status in the industry, achieving gold record status and earning him an invitation to perform at the Tokyo Music Festival, where he charmed audiences with his heartfelt performances.
Philanthropy and Personal Struggles
Lee was not only known for his musical talents but also for his philanthropic efforts. In 2018, he organized charity concerts at MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok, where he emotionally thanked his family, particularly his mother, for their unwavering support throughout his tumultuous career.
He often spoke candidly about his struggles during a challenging period in the mid-1990s when failed business ventures threatened his career, resulting in considerable personal and financial turmoil, including bankruptcy from his ill-fated real estate investments.
Legal Troubles and Resilience
His journey was further complicated in 2000 when he was involved in a legal matter related to possession of ecstasy at a nightclub in Tsim Sha Tsui, which led to a fine and a tarnished reputation.
Despite these setbacks, Lee's resilience shone through as he continued to evolve as an artist.
A New Chapter
In the last phase of his career, Lee shifted his focus to mainland China, where he took on an increasingly prominent role as the artistic director for a media company in Guangzhou in 2023.
Just two weeks before his unexpected death, he shared a poignant video on social media with the solitary caption “Bye,” leaving fans and friends to speculate about the emotional state he might have been in.
Legacy
Lee Kwok-cheung's legacy in Hong Kong music is undeniable, and his unforgettable melodies will continue to resonate in the hearts of many. His contributions to the music industry and his heartfelt connection with fans will be sorely missed.
