Tragic Loss: Former Central Michigan QB Tommy Lazzaro Shot and Killed at 27 in Hunting Accident
In a heartbreaking incident, Tommy Lazzaro, the former quarterback of Central Michigan University, tragically lost his life at the age of 27 after being struck by a stray bullet during a hunting accident at an Air Force base in Florida.
Known affectionately as “Touchdown Tommy,” Lazzaro's untimely death occurred on Sunday at the Eglin Air Force Base in Freeport, Florida. Central Michigan University confirmed the heartbreaking news, leaving many in shock and mourning.
Lazzaro played for the Central Michigan Chippewas from 2016 to 2019, playing a crucial role in leading the team to a Mid-American Conference (MAC) title game appearance in 2019. Over his collegiate career, he participated in 20 games, starting five, and completed 72 passes for 758 yards and five touchdowns, alongside rushing for 542 yards and 11 touchdowns on 133 attempts.
Before his time at Central Michigan, Lazzaro showcased his talent at Dodge City Community College, where he threw for an impressive 2,237 yards and 14 touchdowns in a single season, helping his team secure a 9-3 record. After earning his degree, he followed in the tradition of his father and grandfather by enlisting in the United States Army and achieved the rank of sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group.
The circumstances surrounding Lazzaro's death were somber—a spokesperson confirmed he was on his way to assist a fellow soldier with car trouble when the tragic incident occurred. Described as a “tragic hunting accident,” multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, responded to the scene to investigate.
Col. Patrick Nelson, commander of the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), expressed profound sorrow over Lazzaro's passing, stating, "We will never forget his dedication, courage, and commitment to safeguarding our freedoms." He acknowledged the deep impact Lazzaro had on his comrades, noting that his absence would be felt both professionally and personally.
Central Michigan head coach Jim McElwain also paid tribute to Lazzaro, saying, “When we took over the program, Tommy was truly our leader in so many ways. CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us. He will be missed by all of the Chippewas.”
A memorial service for Tommy Lazzaro is set to be held in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, this Saturday, providing an opportunity for friends, family, and teammates to honor his memory and celebrate his life.
As the community grapples with this profound loss, Lazzaro's legacy as a dedicated athlete and soldier will continue to inspire those who knew and admired him.
