In a shocking turn of events, a report has revealed that the beloved dog of actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Hackman passed away due to dehydration and starvation. The dog, a kelpie mix named Zinna, was found deceased in a crate in a bathroom closet near Betsy Hackman's body in their Santa Fe home.

According to a report from the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s veterinary lab, Zinna showed signs of partial mummification, which, combined with the severe decomposition, complicated the examination. However, the autopsy determined that the dog had not suffered from any infectious diseases, trauma, or poisoning but had an empty stomach, except for small amounts of hair and bile.

Zinna was one of three dogs owned by the couple, with the other two surviving. Tragically, Gene Hackman, renowned for his illustrious Hollywood career, passed away just a week after Betsy. Gene's death was attributed to heart disease complicated by advanced Alzheimer’s, while Betsy succumbed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease transmitted through rodent droppings. Reports indicate that Gene may have been unaware of his wife’s passing due to the advanced stages of his illness.

Both were found in their home showing signs of decomposition, a consequence attributed to the dry, high-elevation climate of Santa Fe. The Sheriff’s Office is currently finalizing its investigation, piecing together the timeline of events with data from cellphones recovered from the home, deeming the case still active.

Joey Padilla, owner of Santa Fe Tails where the surviving dogs were cared for, shared fond memories of Zinna, noting she had a special bond with Betsy, serving as a devoted companion throughout her life.

Betsy Hackman, originally from Hawaii, was a talented concert pianist and met Gene in the mid-1980s while working at a California gym. Gene Hackman enjoyed a storied career in Hollywood, securing two Academy Awards for his performances in iconic films such as The French Connection, Hoosiers, and Superman before retiring in the early 2000s.

Their story, marked by love, companionship, and now tragedy, has left fans and friends mourning the loss of both a legendary actor and his devoted wife, as well as the family pet that brought joy to their lives.
