In a shocking turn of events, a man was shot dead by police in Marseille after he went on a violent rampage, leaving five people injured in and around a local hotel.

Authorities reported that the assailant, brandishing two knives and a baton, refused to comply with police orders to surrender his weapons. The chaotic incident unfolded after the man, identified as a Tunisian national legally residing in France, was evicted from the hotel due to unpaid rent.

Sources say he first attacked a former hotel guest in his old room, then targeted the hotel manager and his son, resulting in severe injuries.

Witnesses at a nearby kebab restaurant recounted the panic as gunshots echoed through the streets close to Marseille's iconic Old Port just after 3 PM local time.

Despite attempts by bystanders to apprehend him, the attacker fled to a snack bar where he further threatened the manager. It was then that police intervened with tasers and firearms.

The situation escalated quickly, with the prosecutor confirming one victim remains in critical condition while two others also suffered serious wounds.

In response to the violence, Marseille's Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced he would visit the attack site later that day, demonstrating the government’s commitment to addressing such threats.

Mayor Benoît Payan took to social media to express solidarity with the victims and commend the swift actions of law enforcement. "The safety of Marseille's residents is my utmost priority, and we will not rest until our community is secure," he stated.
