In a dramatic twist worthy of a Hollywood script, Shimon Yehuda Hayut, the notorious con artist from the Netflix documentary "The Tinder Swindler," has been apprehended in Georgia on a request from Interpol.
Hayut, also infamously known as Simon Leviev, was detained upon his arrival at Batumi International Airport on Sunday, shaking the very foundation of his glamorous deceit.
Between 2017 and 2019, the 34-year-old Hayut allegedly swindled women out of a whopping £7.4 million (about $9 million) by masquerading as the son of billionaire diamond mogul Lev Leviev. He lured victims into a web of financial chaos using the popular dating app Tinder.
The gripping 2022 documentary revealed how Hayut crafted an elaborate online persona to gain his victims' trust, whisking them away on lavish dates complete with private jets and bodyguards. He skillfully manipulated their emotions and finances, often claiming his credit cards were maxed out, asking them to open new accounts in their names for him.
Despite the overwhelming evidence, Hayut has consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting he is a legitimate businessman who achieved his wealth through bitcoin.
In 2019, Hayut was convicted on multiple fraud, forgery, and theft charges in Israel. He received a 15-month sentence but only served five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Alongside his prison time, he was ordered to pay £35,000 in restitution and a fine of around £4,600 for carrying a fraudulent passport.
The details surrounding Hayut's latest arrest remain murky, with the Georgian interior ministry confirming he was detained under an Interpol red notice. The specifics of which country requested his capture have yet to be disclosed.
Hayut’s lawyer mentioned that the reasons for his arrest are still unclear, expressing surprise as he had been traveling freely around the globe.
One victim, Norwegian student Cecilie Fjellhøy, shared her harrowing experience, revealing she was duped into giving Hayut over $270,000, all for what started as a whirlwind romance that began with a private jet flight to Bulgaria.
In another unsettling incident, a victim named Iren Tranov filed a legal claim against Hayut in Israel, demanding repayment of 414,000 shekels (approximately $91,000), claiming he had never repaid the 144,000 shekels (around $31,000) she lent him.
As the world watches, the saga of Shimon Hayut continues, leaving a trail of heartbreak and financial ruin in its wake.
