Tile’s Latest Trackers Transform into Emergency SOS Devices – Here’s What You Need to Know!

2024-09-16

Introduction

Tile, the renowned pioneer in Bluetooth item finders, has introduced a game-changing feature in its latest tracker lineup – the ability to send SOS alerts that notify friends, family, and potentially emergency services when you need help.

New Models and Features

The revamped 2024 Tile Pro, Tile Mate, Tile Slim, and Tile Sticker are the first models released since Life360 acquired Tile nearly three years ago. While these trackers maintain familiar sizes and shapes – designed to fit smoothly on credit cards, key fobs, and even as stickers – they do come with some significant enhancements. Users can expect a louder ring and improved water resistance across the board. However, unlike some competitive offerings like Apple’s AirTags and Samsung’s SmartTag 2, there’s still no implementation of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for hyper-precise tracking. Not to mention, the user-replaceable battery feature remains exclusive to the Tile Pro.

Extended Bluetooth Range

What sets these devices apart is the extended Bluetooth range – now up to 350 feet for Tile and Mate, and a whopping 500 feet for the Pro model! This improved connectivity is invaluable when using the emergency SOS functionality.

Emergency SOS Feature

The new SOS feature allows users to simply triple-tap the tracker button to activate a discreet emergency alert, triggering a 15-second countdown. Following this countdown, text messages and push notifications are dispatched to designated emergency contacts, along with a link to Tile’s emergency dispatch center, but only if you’ve opted for the $14.99 per month Life360 Gold subscription.

Functionality Integration

This SOS Alert function leverages a feature already present in Life360's app. Essentially, users are remotely activating it through their Tile device, which means you need to have your phone paired with the app and within proximity for the alert to be effective.

Emergency Dispatch Process

However, clarity on how emergency dispatch operates is crucial. As stated by Kristi Collura, Life360’s director of communications, if a Life360 member with a Gold or Platinum membership triggers an SOS, the emergency dispatch team will first call to assess the situation and will then contact necessary authorities, such as police or ambulance, based on the urgency. If the member does not respond, local authorities will automatically be notified.

Conclusion

In a time where personal safety is paramount, Tile’s innovative solution gives users peace of mind. That said, it's important to remember that Life360 faced a significant data breach earlier in the year, resulting in the theft of some Tile customer data – a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that can accompany technology.

As Tile takes strides into the future with these advanced features, it remains essential for users to weigh the benefits against potential concerns regarding security and privacy. Whether you’re misplacing your keys or facing an emergency, the new Tile trackers are more than just item locators – they could be your lifeline in critical situations!
