Three Potential NFL Cuts the Eagles Should Consider

The Philadelphia Eagles are sitting pretty with one of the most formidable rosters in the NFL, making them less likely to dive into the waiver wire chaos that other teams might consider. Holding the 32nd spot on the waiver priority order means they’ll have to wait for a lot of teams to pass on players before they can snag someone. But Howie Roseman, ever the strategist, is always on the lookout for ways to enhance the squad, even if it’s just for depth or development.
Minor Additions That Could Make a Big Impact
While the Eagles aren't in the market for starting players off waivers, there are a few names that could fill useful roles or emerge as developmental prospects for the practice squad.
1. CB JuJu Brents
JuJu Brents, a talented cornerback drafted in the second round of 2023 by the Colts, has faced an avalanche of bad luck with injuries. With multiple setbacks, including a torn MCL and meniscus, he’s missed nearly all of his last two seasons. Despite his injury-stricken past, Brents boasts impressive size and athleticism that could flourish with the right coaching. He even had a pre-draft visit to Philadelphia last year, along with other promising talents like Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith. A fresh start with better health could transform Brents into a valuable asset.
2. RS Britain Covey
Britain Covey emerged as one of the NFL's top punt returners in 2023, but a neck injury sidelined him for much of 2024. Although he signed with the Rams, he couldn’t crack their 53-man roster. If the season were to kick off now, the Eagles' punt return duties might fall to either Cooper DeJean or Jahan Dotson. However, neither of those players offers the explosive play-making ability that Covey can bring. Signing Covey to the practice squad could allow the Eagles to elevate him on game days, adding a real threat in the return game.
3. RB Audric Estimé
Audric Estimé, a fifth-round pick by the Broncos, had a promising rookie season with 310 yards and two touchdowns at an impressive 4.1 yards per carry. His 5'11", 227-pound frame makes him a perfect fit as a power back. After the Eagles cut Montrell Johnson, who played a similar role, Estimé could be a better alternative if he clears waivers. Bringing him into the fold could bolster the ground game significantly.
These potential acquisitions, while not game-changers, could deepen the roster with skilled, hungry players ready to prove themselves. As the Eagles aim for another successful season, every little edge counts.
