Captured Chinese Soldiers Expose Russian Military Deceptions
Two Chinese soldiers, fighting for Russia in Ukraine, have shared harrowing accounts of their experiences after being captured by Ukrainian forces. They revealed insights into the grim realities of their deployment and the disturbing Russian propaganda that misled both them and the Chinese public.
From TikTok to the Frontlines: A Troubling Recruitment Journey
Wang Guangjun, one of the captured soldiers, detailed his journey from China to the Russian military, claiming he was recruited through a TikTok advertisement. He traveled through cities such as Kazan and Rostov-on-Don before reaching Ukraine's war-torn Donetsk region.
"I took designated coaches and minibuses, reaching northern Donetsk in just a few days. But shortly after being deployed, I was captured," Wang recounted.
Brutal Training and Poor Living Conditions
During a press conference held by Ukraine’s Security Service, both soldiers described their dire experiences under Russian command. Wang noted the oppressive training conditions, stating, "Running away is not possible. There’s constantly a soldier watching you, even during bathroom breaks. Escape is never an option."
He painted a bleak picture of life at the camp in Rostov, where they lacked basic necessities like water and electricity, often going days with little to eat.
Regret and Reflection on War
Zhang Renbo, the second POW, expressed deep regret for joining the conflict. Having initially traveled to Russia as a tourist, he reflected, "I wish I could tell my parents I’m alive. They didn’t know I joined the war, and even though they might be angry, I am fortunate to be here still."
Wang shared a poignant realization about the nature of war: "It seemed thrilling on TV, but now, every second feels excruciatingly long in reality. I just want to go home and assist Ukrainian authorities."
Unveiling Myths: A Message to Fellow Citizens
When discussing perceptions of Ukraine back home, both soldiers acknowledged that many in China view Ukrainians as attractive. However, they also noted significant impacts of the war on food imports to China. Zhang pointed out, "Since the invasion, our food supplies have dropped significantly."
Wang issued a stark warning to those considering joining the war: "What Russia feeds us are lies. They exaggerate their strength and undervalue Ukraine. When you experience combat, the truth becomes evident. I urge my fellow citizens not to join this war; it’s not ours to fight."
Wang further elaborated on the misinformation spread by Russian authorities, explaining that they instill fear in foreign fighters about the fate that awaits them if captured. "Russia warns us that if we’re caught, the treatment will be brutal, and horrific images will be sent home. It’s a deliberate tactic to instill fear," he said.
