The RPS Selection Box: Graham's Unexpected Games of the Year 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of gaming, every year presents a multitude of titles vying for recognition. However, among all the excitement, some gems may not shine brightly enough to make it into mainstream awards or lists.
Here, I present my selection box of three games that, while perhaps not officially honored, have undoubtedly defined my year. Interestingly, two of these titles didn't even release in 2024, yet they still hold a special place in my gaming heart.
To The Core
The term "incremental games" may not be familiar to many, yet it offers a refreshing perspective on what were traditionally known as "idle games." This rebranding highlights the interactive nature of such games, requiring player decisions and engagement. One prime example is **To The Core**. Players embark on missions to drill deep into various planets, managing resources and upgrades while enjoying the satisfying loop of exploration and discovery.
What sets To The Core apart is its captivating pixel art and dynamic gameplay. As you drill and explore, the visually stunning explosions and effects fill the screen, creating an exhilarating rush reminiscent of classic arcade gameplay mixed with modern RPG elements. Contrary to the brain-numbing fast food of gambling mechanics found in many mobile titles, I liken To The Core and its peers—like *Gnorp Apologue*—to clever nutritional snacks. They may not be soul-nourishing, but they provide a delightful escape that satisfies a gamer’s cravings.
Victory Heat Rally
In a year saturated with retro-style racing games, **Victory Heat Rally** stands out with its intuitive drifting mechanic. Rather than complicating things with overly intricate controls, this game allows players to engage in smooth drifts by simply holding a button around corners. Successfully maintaining your drift fills a meter that rewards you with speed boosts, making gameplay both accessible and exhilarating.
For me, Victory Heat Rally has become the go-to title for quick racing sessions, reminiscent of the joy I found in *Horizon Chase Turbo*. Despite the praise others have heaped upon *Parking Garage Rally Circuit*, the vibrant visuals and dynamic gameplay of Victory Heat Rally resonate more with my racing style. Admittedly, the dialogue can feel clunky at times, but the sheer thrill of the races more than compensates for it.
Fall Guys
While 2024 may not be the year of **Fall Guys**, this delightful, chaotic multiplayer experience continues to charm players worldwide. Despite its recent mobile launch and ongoing updates, the game feels somewhat behind the curve as new trends emerge in competitive gaming. Nonetheless, for me and my son, Fall Guys transcends the typical gaming experience.
It has become a family staple, akin to classic games such as Jenga or table tennis. The joy and competitiveness it brings us are infectious—providing a colorful and friendly atmosphere devoid of the violence or aggressive monetization practices plaguing many contemporary games. Although it might not deserve a spot in this year's Advent Calendar, Fall Guys undeniably warrants recognition for the happiness it has consistently delivered into our lives.
In summary, while these games may not have checked all the boxes on industry awards lists, they are the unsung heroes that embodied my gaming experiences this year.
If you’re seeking titles that balance fun, engagement, and a sense of community, look no further than these standout selections!
