Nestled at the vibrant edge of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour, The Peninsula Hotel is not just the oldest luxury hotel in the city; it's a cultural icon. Since its grand opening nearly a century ago, this historic landmark has graced the silver screen in James Bond movies and has been immortalized in countless souvenirs. With its iconic facade serving as a picturesque backdrop for tourists visiting the nearby Avenue of Stars and the bustling shopping haven of Tsim Tsa Tsui, afternoon tea at The Peninsula has become a cherished rite of passage for both locals and visitors alike.
Emphasizing its role as a public space, The Peninsula has initiated the Art in Residence program, a unique initiative that commissions artists to create captivating works throughout its premises. Launched in 2019, this program supports emerging and mid-career artists by providing funding, curatorial guidance, and exhibition opportunities to unveil their creativity in a bustling public setting.
This year, starting from late March, a striking installation is turning heads along The Peninsula’s facade. Hong Kong artist Phoebe Hui presents "Lunar Rainbow," a breathtaking display featuring digitally printed aluminum panels that evoke images of the moon. After months of research and structural engineering study, Hui’s monumental work is already captivating onlookers, many of whom are sharing delightful selfies in front of her installation.
Inside, another intriguing piece awaits guests on the first floor, right by The Verandah, the hotel’s renowned restaurant. The Flow Pavilion, designed by new media artist h0nh1m in collaboration with the carpet makers Tai Ping, invites guests into an immersive experience. This installation reimagines a zen garden with a tea house encircled by a one-way mirror. What’s more intriguing? Inside the tea house are programmed robots that weave dynamic patterns on the carpet, reflecting the artist’s brain waves during meditation. According to h0nh1m’s team, this all-encompassing artwork promises a multisensory experience, encouraging visitors to achieve deep focus and tranquility.
