A Celestial Marvel Debuts in the UK

The newly minted Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) is taking the morning sky by storm, and astrophotographer Josh Dury had the incredible fortune of capturing its brilliance early today.

"What an amazing experience to see such a fresh comet just hours after it got its official name!" Dury exclaimed, radiating excitement.

An Awe-Inspiring Capture

Dury's breathtaking photograph features the comet streaking above the picturesque Mendip Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset, U.K., at around 4:50 a.m. local time.

Armed with a Sony A7S II and a Sigma 150-600mm lens, Dury expertly captured the comet at a focal length of 369mm, showcasing its unique beauty.

"Comets are incredible celestial attractions, like capturing dirty snowballs from the edges of our solar system," Dury noted. "Each one has its own distinct personality in color and form, offering insights into the early days of our universe."

The Journey of Discovery

Discovered in late March by Australian amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo, Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN) emerged from data collected by the SWAN instrument aboard the sun-monitoring SOHO spacecraft. This device tracks hydrogen in solar winds and has been instrumental in identifying comets.

With sufficient observations and confirmation from the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center, the comet is officially designated as C/2025 F2 (SWAN).
