In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but the impact on their Super Bowl odds has barely budged. As fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming season, the betting lines reveal a grim reality.
At DraftKings, the Steelers' odds to clinch a Super Bowl victory only marginally improved, shifting from +4500 to +4000. This puts them in a precarious position as 40-1 long shots, still far from top contenders.
Interestingly, other bookmakers haven't adjusted their lines at all. BetMGM continues to list the Steelers at 45-1. This lack of movement indicates that the acquisition of Rodgers was largely anticipated and perhaps not enough to inspire confidence among bettors.
Rodgers' arrival comes after the Steelers initially opened at a staggering 80-1 to win the Super Bowl, highlighting how low expectations were prior to this signing. Even with a legendary name like Rodgers, the Steelers remain overshadowed by elite teams such as the Bills (+700), Ravens (+700), Chiefs (+750), and Bengals (+2000). The Chargers and Broncos are also viewed as better bets at +2500.
Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook’s V.P. of risk, Ed Salmons, painted a stark picture of Rodgers’ current capabilities. "Rodgers has been awful," he remarked. He pointed to the quarterback's struggles before and after his Achilles injury, noting that his performance in Green Bay last season was far from stellar. Salmons even suggested that Mason Rudolph and Rodgers offer similar prospects for the Steelers.
As the new season approaches, the lingering question remains: Will Aaron Rodgers elevate the Steelers from being mere playoff participants to serious contenders, or are they destined for another early exit without the glory of a Super Bowl win over the past nine years?
