Good news for Hong Kong as no new cases of chikungunya fever (CF) were reported as of August 21! However, health officials are urging residents to remain vigilant against mosquito-borne diseases that could arise, especially with the ongoing global concerns.

Chikungunya Concerns Explained

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has confirmed that although there haven’t been any new imported cases for the past six days, the combination of high temperatures and rainfall presents a significant risk for outbreaks. Dr. Edwin Tsui, Controller of the CHP, emphasized the importance of mosquito control measures and personal protection, both locally and while traveling.

Back to School, Back to Action!

As schools re-open, it's crucial that educational institutions adhere to anti-mosquito guidelines provided by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD). Dr. Tsui urged schools to eliminate stagnant water and mosquito breeding sites to protect staff and students alike. "Mosquito-borne diseases are not spread person-to-person, but community action is vital to reduce risk," he added.

The Chikungunya Situation So Far

In 2023, Hong Kong reported nine imported cases of CF, with patients aged from 8 to 79. Most had traveled to regions like Foshan and Bangladesh, experiencing symptoms soon after their return, predominantly fever and joint pain.

Global Chikungunya Outbreaks

Residents should also be aware that chikungunya outbreaks are occurring in many countries worldwide. Prior to traveling, it's essential to check health advisories for destinations and continue health monitoring after returning.

Dengue Fever: Still on the Radar

Dengue fever (DF) remains a concern, with 41 imported cases recorded this year. Though no cases were noted from August 15 to 20, outbreaks in neighboring regions remain severe, heightening the risk of new infections in Hong Kong.

Other Mosquito-Borne Diseases to Watch

The CHP also reported an imported case of Japanese Encephalitis, the first since 2020. This highlights the necessity for awareness, as symptoms can escalate quickly. No cases of Zika virus have been reported this year, but it remains a concern in regions like Southeast Asia and the Americas.

Elderly Care and Awareness Programs

To combat the spread of these diseases, the Visiting Health Teams are actively educating the elderly about preventive measures and travel health at various centers. Enhanced mosquito control is also being emphasized at elderly care homes.

Protect Yourself – Key Takeaways!

Avoiding mosquito bites and targeting breeding sites is essential. Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, responsible for chikungunya, dengue, and Zika, are frequently found in Hong Kong. If returning from affected regions, using insect repellent and monitoring health conditions are crucial.

Health officials warn against using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen if feeling unwell and advise against giving aspirin to children to avoid serious complications.
