Starbucks is making waves by revamping its iconic dress code, aiming to let the beloved green apron take center stage. This change comes as part of an effort to foster a familiar atmosphere for customers everywhere.

What’s New in the Dress Code?

Starting May 12, baristas will don solid black shirts—be it short or long-sleeved, collared or button-up—paired with khaki, black, or blue denim pants. This simpler look is designed to enhance the Starbucks experience for all.

Union Concerns About Dress Code Changes!

However, not everyone is toasting to this new policy. A week prior to the announcement, Starbucks Workers United, representing over 525 store workers, requested a freeze on any dress code modifications in union-represented locations until ongoing negotiations are concluded.

Jasmine Leli, a barista of three years and union delegate, criticized the move, stating, "Instead of tackling pressing issues facing baristas, Starbucks is pushing a restrictive dress code. Many workers are already struggling with low wages and unstable hours; imposing this change only adds pressure for employees to buy new attire."

Branded Tees to the Rescue!

In a bid to soften the blow, Starbucks announced it will provide its partners with free branded T-shirts.

According to Starbucks' statement, this dress code revision is all about consistency. "We’re focused on clear guidance for our partners, allowing them to dedicate their energy toward crafting exceptional beverages and building personal connections with customers."

This dress code revolution aligns with CEO Brian Niccol's "Back to Starbucks" initiative, launched in August. Niccol has previously simplified the menu to reduce barista workload, cut fees for non-dairy milk, and initiated positive messaging on cups.
