Star Stylists Unite to Restore Hope and Wardrobes for Fire Victims
In a heartwarming display of solidarity, renowned Hollywood stylists Elizabeth Stewart and Jordan Grossman have sprung into action to assist victims of the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles. The duo, who previously founded the non-profit Chic Relief during the pandemic, initially began packing wardrobe essentials for five personal friends who were displaced by the flames. Realizing the magnitude of the crisis, they launched a broader initiative aimed at providing clothing and support to hundreds of families facing similar hardships.
Stewart remarked, "We thought, 'We can do this for a lot more people!'" What started as a small endeavor has quickly evolved into a robust network involving stylists, celebrities, and industry leaders eager to extend their resources to those in dire need.
Among the many supporters is Jeanne Yang, who has styled A-list stars like Keanu Reeves and Taika Waititi. She emphasized the emotional significance of clothing, stating, “Clothing may seem insignificant, but you need it to live and to feel comfortable.”
Chic Relief is working on tailored programs that assist families in a compassionate manner, helping to ease the impact of the trauma they have experienced. One significant initiative includes a central relief location on Civic Center Drive founded by Ashlee Margolis, offering fashion items and toiletries from over 100 brands, in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District Education Foundation. Families will have direct access to these resources over the next five months.
Celebrity involvement has been overwhelming, with Jennifer Lopez being among the first to donate an astounding quantity of clothing. Other stars like Mark and Katie Duplass and Lucy Hale are also stepping up to lend a hand.
Stewart, whose clients include the likes of Julia Roberts and Viola Davis, highlighted the unique position stylists hold in this crisis: “We have a big closet that we work with, plus our personal closets, so we’re in a position to help. It isn’t just about short-term needs; we want to lift their spirits and help them rebuild their lives.”
As the outreach effort expands, Chic Relief has connected with over 220 families in need. Upcoming distribution events will allow these families to select personalized clothing packed in donated suitcases from brands like Ricardo, Herschel, and BÉIS. Although upcoming events are fully booked, continuous efforts to deliver care packages will be made.
Several stylists have joined the cause, donating items from their personal wardrobes and leveraging their industry connections. For instance, Wendi & Nicole contributed men’s suiting, while Jamie Mizrahi cleared her closet to help those affected. Additionally, innovative talent managers and photographers are using their resources to support the initiative, creating a ripple of generosity across Hollywood.
The emotional toll of the fires is palpable. Stewart shared an impactful story about one of her friends who arrived in distressing shape, symbolizing the physical and emotional scars left by the disaster. In conversations about recovery, stylist Ilaria Urbinati has helped over 60 families, helping them regain their identities through clothing. “Someone I know lost her home; it was her first home with everything she owns,” she recalled, illustrating the human side of this tragedy.
As the community comes together to help, it’s clear that these initiatives are more than just about clothing. They represent a much-needed emotional support structure for those working to rebuild after losing their homes. Yang recognized the silver lining amid the disaster, reflecting on how the fashion community has united in unprecedented ways to bring a sense of hope and restoration to those affected.
Though the challenges ahead are daunting, the collective spirit of giving and resilience shines bright, proving that even amidst tragedy, there is always a glimmer of hope, connection, and love.
