In a significant endorsement for emerging filmmakers, renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Stanley Kwan Kam-pang has expressed his strong support for “A Stranger at My Door,” the second feature film by director Zheng Lu Xinyuan. This compelling drama has been selected to participate in the prestigious Hong Kong — Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), which runs concurrently with the renowned Hong Kong FilMart.
“A Stranger at My Door” boasts a budget of $1.1 million and delves deep into themes of trauma and healing. The narrative revolves around Lee, an amateur filmmaker grappling with the fallout of her late mother’s struggles with sexual abuse while simultaneously navigating the end of a long-term relationship. Set against the backdrop of both Putonghua and English dialogue, the film follows Lee's journey as she seeks solace in Clément, a French composer, while confronting the haunting legacy of her mother’s ghost.
At the HAF, the production team is actively seeking funding, co-producers, sales agents, and opportunities for pre-sales, indicating an ambitious vision for the film's international reach.
Zheng Lu Xinyuan's debut feature, “The Cloud in Her Room,” achieved notable success, securing the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and winning two Golden Firebird awards at the Hong Kong International Film Festival in 2020. Additionally, her essay film “Jet Lag” premiered in the Forum section of the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival, where it garnered a special mention at the Festival des 3 Continents.
Kwan shared his enthusiasm for the project with Variety, commenting, “After reading the materials Xinyuan handed me, I felt that it was a good script. When a project resonates with me and evokes emotions, that is all I need to support it.” He further emphasized the significance of a well-crafted script, stating, “I have confidence in my judgment, and I believe that young directors capable of writing such meaningful scripts also possess the talent necessary to captivate audiences.”
The film aims to explore often unspoken truths that may fade into irrelevance over time, yet remain profoundly impactful for those who have experienced them. Zheng articulated her vision, expressing a desire for the film to create meaningful connections. “If the film can make even one person feel less lonely in this vast world, I would consider it a success,” she noted.
With Kwan’s backing and a compelling narrative, “A Stranger at My Door” is poised to make waves in the film industry, potentially establishing itself as a must-see work in the coming years. Stay tuned as this project unfolds in the cinematic landscape.
