Spirit Airlines Braces for Major Service Cuts

In a stunning move, Spirit Airlines is set to terminate services to 11 cities this October as it embarks on a substantial reorganization amid bankruptcy. This drastic change is part of the airline's strategy to streamline operations and regain financial stability.

Cities Facing Service Shutdown

The airline will chop routes to several destinations starting the week of October 2, 2025. The cities on the chopping block include:

- Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), New Mexico

- Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), Alabama

- Boise Airport (BOI), Idaho

- Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA), Tennessee

- Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE), South Carolina

- Oakland International Airport (OAK), California

- Portland International Airport (PDX), Oregon

- Sacramento International Airport (SMF), California

- Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), Utah

- San Diego International Airport (SAN), California

- San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC), California.

Suspended Expansion Plans

Additionally, Spirit has halted plans to add Mid Georgia Regional Airport (MCN) in Macon, Georgia, to its network, which was scheduled for October 16.

Chapter 11 Bankruptcy: A Strategic Retreat

This announcement follows Spirit's second Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in less than a year. The airline's leadership outlined its goals of reducing costs, shedding aircraft, and shrinking its network to pave the way for a potential return to profitability.

Fred Cromer, Spirit’s Chief Financial Officer, emphasized in a recent court statement that the airline is shifting focus to key markets. This includes enhancing connectivity in selected focus cities while dialing back operations in less profitable ones.
