South Korean & Hong Kong Films Dominate Asian Film Awards Nominations; Sammo Hung to Lead Judging Panel
The heat is on for this year’s Asian Film Awards as South Korea’s exceptional thriller *Exhuma* leads the nominations with a staggering 11 nods. Following closely is Hong Kong’s own action epic, *Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In,* which has secured nine nominations.
The prestigious awards ceremony is scheduled for March 16 in Hong Kong, showcasing a vibrant array of 30 films from 25 different countries, competing in 16 categories. In this exciting lineup, martial arts legend Sammo Hung has been appointed as the Jury President, marking an important leadership role at this celebrated event.
Directed by Jang Jae-hyun, *Exhuma* is vying for accolades in key categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress, among others. This film explores deep themes of loss and redemption, captivating audiences and critics alike.
*Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In*, adapted from Yuyi's thrilling novel *City of Darkness,* is also a strong contender. This action-packed blockbuster has received nominations for Best Film and other technical categories, including Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
In the run for Best Film, *Exhuma* will face off against *All We Imagine as Light*, a French-Indian-Dutch-Luxembourg co-production directed by Payal Kapadia, and *Teki Cometh*, a Japanese film that addresses themes of loneliness through the compelling story of a retired professor.
Payal Kapadia’s work has been particularly notable, especially following her historic win at Cannes where she became the first Indian female director to take home the Grand Prix award. Her film has garnered six nominations this year, including Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Hung expressed his excitement about leading the jury: “It is my pleasure to serve as the Jury President for the Asian Film Awards. It is a significant responsibility, and I hope to continue working with my peers to support the development of the Asian film industry.” He will collaborate with over 200 voting members to decide this year's prestigious winners.
Wilfred Wong, chairman of the Asian Film Awards Academy, highlighted the awards' role in showcasing Asian cinema on the global stage, saying, “The Asian Film Awards celebrate the exceptional achievements of Asian filmmakers while providing an important platform for cultural exchange and collaboration.”
With nominations that encompass various crafts within filmmaking, the awards aim to elevate the industry while nurturing emerging talent. Don’t miss the chance to witness these cinematic milestones as the Asian Film Awards draws closer!
