Sotheby’s Moves Into the Wine Scene

Sotheby’s is shaking up the luxury landscape in Hong Kong with the announcement of a brand new wine shop and lounge at their stunning Maison! This innovative venue, which recently held its first live wine auction in March, is set to become a hotspot for wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.

A Revolutionary Space for Fine Wines

George Lacey, Sotheby’s director and head of wine in Asia, believes the ground floor ‘grotto’ is the perfect backdrop for showcasing fine wines, art, and collectibles. The March auction, held in this transformed space, blended cutting-edge technology with an inviting atmosphere, leading to exceptional sales that exceeded expectations. The star of the show? A rare collection of 12 bottles of Richebourg 2007 Domaine Leroy, which fetched an eye-popping HK$625,000 (US$80,350).

The Luxury Hub of Hong Kong

Opening in July 2024, the sprawling 24,000 square foot Maison occupies the former flagship store of Armani. Positioned on a bustling pedestrian thoroughfare in the heart of Hong Kong’s financial district, it aims to attract a diverse clientele that may have otherwise felt daunted by traditional auction houses.

Welcoming a New Era of Wine Appreciation

Lacey emphasizes the role of the Maison in engaging new clients: 'Since our opening, we’ve welcomed half a million visitors.' The wine shop and lounge will serve as a central hub where patrons can unwind with a glass after work or while indulging in some retail therapy. Designed by renowned architect MVDRV, it promises a modern and chic atmosphere that aligns perfectly with Sotheby’s prestigious brand.

Cultivating a Younger Audience

With 32% of Sotheby’s bidders in Hong Kong under 40, Lacey is keen to foster this younger demographic. He sees the new wine lounge as a vital component in bridging the gap from day to evening experiences while offering tastings and masterclasses geared towards cultivating a new generation of collectors.

Going Global: Sotheby’s International Vision

But Sotheby’s is not stopping there! They plan to take their successful Hong Kong concept globally with new locations in the iconic Breuer Building on Madison Avenue, NYC, and Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. Lacey's ambitions include conducting up to five live wine auctions and 14 online auctions annually, solidifying Sotheby’s as a major player in the luxury wine market.

Join the Celebration!

With an engaged clientele who appreciate the finer things, from wine to art and jewelry, Lacey is ensuring that Sotheby’s meets all their sophisticated needs. Cheers to a new chapter in luxury wine culture!
