Get ready to be blown away, Sonic fans! While Sonic Mania 2 never made it to the finish line, the curtain has finally lifted on some tantalizing prototype images that offer a sneak peek into the game that could have been.

Director Christian Whitehead took to social media to share these exciting visuals in honor of Sonic Mania's eighth anniversary, igniting nostalgia and curiosity among gamers.

Meet Kanga Clanga: The Unseen Badnik!

Among the highlights of these images is a brand-new antagonist: Kanga Clanga Badnik. This fascinating character is depicted in the 2.5D prototype, showcasing a playful yet dangerous design. According to Whitehead, Kanga Clanga impressively balances on its tail while launching attacks with its springy feet, sending Sonic flying with formidable force!

Why Did Sonic Mania 2 Never Happen?

In a couple of reflective interviews, both Whitehead and Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka hinted at the reasons behind Sonic Mania 2's cancellation. Iizuka revealed that discussions about a collaborative project were underway, with the idea to venture beyond just pixel art. Whitehead mentioned experimenting with 2.5D gameplay, which is now evident through the prototype images.

However, as Iizuka lamented, 'everything came to a stop' for reasons that remain a mystery. Following this disappointment, SEGA opted to shift gears and create Sonic Superstars with Arzest.
