In a significant development for rugby enthusiasts, Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) has officially announced the appointment of Simon Amor as their Executive Director of Performance and Representative Rugby. Known for his impressive track record, the former England 7s captain brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Amor’s recent coaching stints include leading the Japan and USA Men's Sevens teams and serving as the interim Head Coach of Hong Kong’s men's 15s in late 2021. His return to the HKCR comes at a pivotal time when the organization is gearing up for major challenges on the global rugby stage.
James Farndon, CEO of HKCR, expressed enthusiasm about Amor’s appointment, highlighting its importance in driving world-class standards and enhancing relationships with key stakeholders. Farndon stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Simon back to Hong Kong. His vast experience across both 7s and 15s rugby uniquely positions him to lead our ambitious strategies.”
Amor is set to officially start his new role on June 3, 2025. He said, “Returning to Hong Kong China Rugby at such an exciting time in its history fills me with joy. We have crucial objectives ahead, including qualifying for both Men's and Women's XV World Cups and the Olympic Games.”
He added, “I am eager to work with an ambitious and motivated team to foster excellence and cohesion across our rugby programs.”
The transition to Amor’s leadership comes as he takes over from Pete Drewett, who held the interim Executive Director position since early March. Farndon acknowledged Drewett's efforts, stating, “Pete’s contributions during this interim period have been invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his support and impact on the organization.”
Farndon also underscored Amor’s qualifications, which align well with his new responsibilities, including an MBA in Sports Management and an MSc in Executive Coaching, showcasing his extensive background in elite coaching programs.
Simon Amor's coaching capabilities span various rugby formats. He has enjoyed significant success as Head Coach for the USA Men's 7s, Japan Men's 7s, and England 7s, as well as making notable contributions as England Rugby’s Attack Coach under Eddie Jones.
Recognized for his achievements across Europe, North America, and Asia, Amor has earned medals at prestigious tournaments, including the Commonwealth Games and Six Nations. His ties to rugby in Hong Kong are strong, having both played and coached in the iconic Hong Kong Sevens, where he captained England to four tournament wins.
With a proven record and a deep understanding of the rugby landscape, Simon Amor’s appointment heralds a new chapter for HKCR, as they aim to set higher benchmarks in international rugby.
