Childhood Trauma: A Silent Epidemic in Hong Kong
A groundbreaking survey has just unveiled an alarming reality: a staggering 85% of adults in Hong Kong have faced at least one adverse childhood experience (ACE). This startling statistic highlights the pervasive shadow of early-life trauma that continues to affect the lives of many.
Conducted by a dedicated local anti-domestic violence organization, this eye-opening study surveyed 3,000 residents from 2023 until April 2025, revealing the haunting effects of intergenerational violence and childhood hardships.
The Disturbing Findings
The results are nothing short of shocking. Among the respondents, 44% reported experiencing four or more ACEs, psychologically debilitating experiences that can shape one’s future. Psychological abuse emerged as the most prevalent, with 65% of individuals reporting instances of verbal humiliation and belittlement from caregivers. The survey also revealed high rates of physical abuse at 53% and emotional neglect at 52%.
A Cycle of Trauma
Experts warn that unchecked trauma often cascades through generations. Parents who have not resolved their own childhood adversities may unintentionally perpetuate harmful parenting practices, fueling a cycle of violence that impacts the next generation.
A Call to Action
As Hong Kong prepares for the implementation of the Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse Ordinance next year, experts emphasize a crucial gap in existing parenting programs. Many focus on basic caregiving skills, but fail to address the profound importance of healing from past traumas. A comprehensive approach that tackles the roots of trauma is essential to breaking this cycle and fostering healthier family dynamics.
The time has come for Hong Kong to face this silent epidemic head-on and advocate for changes that not only protect children but also support parents in their healing journey.
