Researchers studied a massive dataset of nearly 250,000 death records during the hottest year on record. They mapped heatwave-related deaths across 2,288 communities, finding an average of 1.08 deaths for every 100,000 residents annually due to extreme heat.

The Disparity in Mortality Rates

Queensland leads with a death rate of 1.42 per 100,000, closely followed by New South Wales at 1.38. Meanwhile, the Northern Territory recorded 1.17, and surprisingly, Western Australia had the lowest rate at 0.35, yet certain rural areas displayed concerning figures.

The study highlights that communities with older populations, lower incomes, and educational backgrounds face a heavier burden from heatwaves. In addition, rural and remote areas exhibit higher mortality rates, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted interventions.

Prof Guo warns that this trend is not going away; heatwaves are predicted to become more frequent and more severe. Failure to act could result in catastrophic increases in health issues. The national climate risk assessment indicates staggering expected increases in heat-related deaths—by 190% in Sydney and 126% in Melbourne if global temperatures rise by 2°C.
