Fifteen Charged in Sinister European Arson Scheme

In a startling revelation, Lithuanian prosecutors announced that fifteen individuals have been charged in connection with a shocking Russia-backed operation aimed at conducting arson attacks across Europe using courier services.

GRU Connections and International Arrests

The prosecutor general's office in Vilnius disclosed that the investigation has linked these suspects to the GRU, Russia's notorious military intelligence agency. Nationalities involved include citizens from Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Ukraine, highlighting the international dimension of this nefarious network.

Explosives Disguised in Everyday Items

What makes this plot even more alarming is the method of execution. The suspects allegedly concealed homemade explosive devices, loaded with thermite—a dangerously flammable substance—inside seemingly benign items like massage pillows and cosmetics tubes.

A Dangerous Delivery Gone Wrong

Last year, several of these incendiary devices detonated in the UK, Germany, and Poland while in transit via major courier services, DHL and DPD. Prosecutors reported that on July 19, 2024, four packages were dispatched by a network member, leading to chaos.

One package exploded in a DHL warehouse in Birmingham, while another malfunctioned due to a technical issue. In a similar incident, one of the DPD parcels ignited at a logistics center in Leipzig, Germany, and another went up in flames in a delivery truck in Poland.

Ongoing Investigations and Discoveries

While Lithuanian authorities have not disclosed the exact number of arrests made, they have confirmed that international warrants have been issued for three individuals. Over thirty searches were conducted across Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, and Estonia, leading to the discovery of six kilograms of explosives.

Alarming Connections to Previous Attacks

Moreover, investigators revealed that some of the suspects were also implicated in an arson incident targeting an Ikea store in Vilnius earlier this year.
