Rare Plague Case Discovered in South Lake Tahoe

In an alarming turn of events, a resident of South Lake Tahoe has tested positive for the plague, with health officials suspecting a flea bite acquired during a camping trip as the source of infection.

The individual is currently recovering at home, but the news serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the wild.

The Plague: Still a Threat in California

According to Kyle Fliflet, El Dorado County's acting public health director, "Plague is naturally present in many areas of California, particularly at higher elevations in El Dorado County." He emphasized the importance of taking safety measures for both humans and pets when venturing into nature.

Rarity of Human Cases But Serious Consequences

While cases of human plague are extremely rare, they can lead to serious health issues. The last recorded case in El Dorado County was in 2020, and prior to that, two visitors from Yosemite National Park were infected in 2015.

Rodent Population Monitored for Plague

This year alone, county health officials have detected the plague bacterium in four rodents. From 2021 to 2024, 41 rodents tested positive, showcasing that the threat remains very real.

To minimize contact with infected fleas, wear long pants tucked into boots and apply insect repellent containing DEET on your socks and pant cuffs.
