In a bizarre twist, a Hong Kong man has been apprehended after a nine-year-old boy consumed a soft drink that allegedly contained urine. This alarming discovery has sent ripples of concern throughout the community.
The drama unfolded when reports emerged in late July about numerous bottles of Coca-Cola Plus and 7Up drinks possibly tainted with urine across several supermarkets in Sham Shui Po, Mong Kok, and Wan Chai. One particularly disturbing case involved the young boy who fell ill after drinking a contaminated bottle and required hospital treatment.
Through meticulous examination of surveillance footage and other leads, police identified and arrested a 63-year-old unemployed man at his Sham Shui Po home. Shockingly, officers discovered clothing and a backpack believed to be linked to the crime.
Authorities revealed that the man had a grudge against supermarket staff and sought revenge on them, targeting their products. However, the specific supermarkets involved have not been disclosed.
The alleged perpetrator is set to face the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts to answer serious charges, including administering poison with intent to harm, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison.
Chief Inspector Alex Yau from the West Kowloon Crime Bureau condemned the act as not only a severe food safety concern but also as a despicable offense against the community.
In response to the situation, a total of seven soft drink bottles were tested during routine inspections, with results indicating the suspected presence of urine. Thankfully, police confirmed that no actual poison was found.
Yau urged the public to be vigilant when purchasing drinks, advising them to ensure bottle caps are sealed and to inspect the color and volume for any signs of tampering.
