In a stunning turn of events, Top Rank announced on Friday that the highly anticipated fight between Keyshawn Davis and Edwin De Los Santos has been abruptly cancelled. This shocking decision comes after Davis failed to make weight earlier that day.
The showdown was set to take place at Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia—Davis' hometown—where he was slated to defend his WBO lightweight title. However, Davis came in at a hefty 139.3 pounds, exceeding the 135-pound weight limit by a staggering 4.3 pounds. As a result of this weight miss, he was stripped of his title, meaning De Los Santos would have been the only fighter eligible to claim the championship.
Sampson Lewkowicz, De Los Santos' promoter, voiced his frustrations over Davis' failure to meet the weight requirements, indicating that attempts were made to salvage the main event through extensive negotiations. Unfortunately, discussions fell flat as both parties could not reach an agreement.
"We tried to renegotiate for 10 pounds plus money, but it became clear that Davis didn't put in the effort to make weight," Lewkowicz told ESPN's Salvador Rodriguez. "He came to the scale practically dancing. We didn't want a repeat of what happened with Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia. So we made the tough choice to cancel the fight."
Lewkowicz was alluding to a previous incident where Garcia missed weight before his title bout with Haney, which led to a questionable outcome when Garcia later tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
"The priority is Edwin, and I hope he serves as an example for everyone in the sport," Lewkowicz added.
In the wake of this cancellation, Abdullah Mason's lightweight bout with Jeremia Nakathila has been elevated to the main event for Saturday night. Additionally, Keyshawn Davis' brother, Kelvin, will now take on Nahir Albright in a junior lightweight co-main event.
