While some parents resort to growth hormones to boost their children's height, startling research reveals that ADHD medications such as Ritalin could be doing the exact opposite. As discussed in a recent New York Times article, the implications of the Multimodal Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Study (commonly referred to as the MTA Study) have left many questioning the long-term effects of these commonly prescribed drugs.

Initial Findings: The Height Dilemma

The MTA Study began in 1994, enrolling 579 children diagnosed with ADHD who were treated with either Ritalin, counseling, a combination of both, or no intervention at all. Researchers intended to monitor various outcomes, but after three years, an unexpected trend emerged: those on Ritalin were growing significantly slower compared to their untreated peers.

Initially, researchers believed this growth disparity would diminish during puberty. However, the follow-up nine years later revealed a shocking statistic: the children who took Ritalin were still an average of 1.6 inches shorter than those who didn’t.

The Complicated Reality of ADHD Treatment
