A recent study published in **Frontiers in Marine Science** has introduced a groundbreaking classification system for understanding the causes of these scars in great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias). Study author Scot Anderson from the California White Shark Project explains, "The markings seen on sharks provide crucial insights into their interactions—be it with each other, their environment, or even humans."

The project team recently shared footage of a striking 16ft female great white exhibiting a perfectly circular scar on her head—eerily reminiscent of a dolphin’s blowhole. This distinctive mark reveals that she fell prey to a cookiecutter shark, known for its unique biting style that creates such round scars.

Anderson elaborates that these cookiecutter wounds showcase when white sharks encounter this species during specific migratory phases, especially in offshore habitats. But that’s not all—other scars might signal boat strikes, mating bites, or injuries from rocky terrains.

Interestingly, female great whites often bear light impressions from the bites of their male counterparts during mating. Anderson notes that these "hold bites" are typically healed by the time they're observed, hinting that mating likely occurs offshore, providing yet another puzzle piece in the mystery of great white reproduction.

In order to decode these scars, the study identifies various patterns: spaced dots indicate past infestations by parasites, while parallel cuts suggest encounters with boat propellers. Even white “rope burns” can signal entanglements in fishing nets.

The proposed systematic classification system aims to help scientists trace the origins of various injuries, enriching our understanding of the lives of these formidable creatures.
