Vitamin A and Measles in Texas

A so-called remedy for measles is causing distressing health issues in Texas. A children's hospital in the area has reported alarming cases of vitamin A toxicity in several young patients diagnosed with measles.

The troubling trend was first highlighted by The New York Times last week, and has since drawn attention from local media as well. At Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock, one of several counties experiencing a measles outbreak, fewer than 10 children have been treated for both measles and vitamin A toxicity.

This situation is particularly concerning because Robert F. Kennedy Jr., head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has advocated for the use of vitamin A as a treatment option despite the lack of appropriate evidence supporting its use in the United States.

Measles Outbreaks Across the Region

Currently, Texas, along with New Mexico, Oklahoma, and possibly Kansas, is grappling with numerous measles outbreaks – with over 500 reported cases since January. The true number may be significantly higher as many infections go unreported.

These outbreaks predominantly impact communities with low vaccination rates, highlighting that vaccination remains the most effective method for controlling this highly contagious disease.

Kennedy's Controversial Claims

Kennedy, a long-time vaccine skeptic whose assertions have often been debunked, has tentatively endorsed vaccination amidst rising case numbers. However, he continues to promote various unproven treatments.

In a recent Fox News interview, he suggested that cod liver oil pills, known for their high vitamin A content, alongside steroids and antibiotics, could serve as effective measles therapies.

Risks of Vitamin A Toxicity

While research indicates that measles can pose severe risks for children who are vitamin A deficient, the occurrence of such deficiencies is exceedingly rare in the U.S., affecting only about 0.3% of the population.

Furthermore, there is no substantial evidence that cod liver oil is beneficial for measles. The high dosages sometimes administered for treatment can lead to toxicity, and unfortunately, this seems to be the case with the affected children in Texas, where excess vitamin A can lead to serious, sometimes irreversible organ damage.

Current Situation and Response

As of early April, more than 600 measles cases have been reported across the United States, with travel-related infections confirmed in 17 other states. A staggering 97% of these cases involve unvaccinated individuals or those with unknown vaccination status, with 74 hospitalizations primarily affecting children.

Tragically, at least one death has been linked to the outbreak, and health officials in New Mexico are currently investigating another potential fatality connected to measles.

As the situation unfolds, public health advocates are urging a renewed emphasis on vaccinations to prevent further harm and ensure community health safety. With misinformation spreading rapidly, it's crucial for families to consult with healthcare professionals about proven and safe measures to protect children from measles and other preventable diseases.
