The Houston Texans have decided to part ways with wide receiver Diontae Johnson following a brief and tumultuous stint with the team. The franchise made the announcement on Tuesday, just days before their crucial divisional-round battle against the Kansas City Chiefs.

In his short time with the Texans, Johnson managed to play in just two games, where he recorded a modest total of two receptions for 12 yards against the Tennessee Titans and one catch for 12 yards in the wild-card victory against the Los Angeles Chargers. The 28-year-old wideout was originally grabbed off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on December 23, hoping to give the Texans a much-needed boost on offense.

"With Diontae, unfortunately it didn't work out, and we're on to the Chiefs," stated Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans, expressing disappointment over the situation. Johnson’s frustration became evident after the Texans' playoff win against the Chargers, where he was calmed down by teammates after his minimal impact on the game—playing just 16 snaps, which accounted for only 22% of the offensive plays.

Before joining the Texans, Johnson was acquired by Baltimore from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in October. However, he quickly voiced his discontent regarding his role in the Ravens' offense, leading to a suspension in Week 15 for conduct detrimental to the team. Since last year, Johnson has had an eventful journey, playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, Ravens, and now Texans, with multiple trades and waivers marking his path.

Now, Johnson finds himself back on the waiver wire, and it remains uncertain whether any of the remaining teams will show interest. He was initially seen as a potential "X-factor" for the Texans heading into the playoffs, especially with the absences of key players like Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell. However, the team ultimately deemed Johnson to be expendable and will instead look to players like John Metchie III, Robert Woods, and Xavier Hutchinson to support Nico Collins in the receiving corps.

Throughout his career, Johnson has accumulated impressive stats, totaling 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns over 77 games. He showcased his potential by making the Pro Bowl in 2021 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he notched 107 catches for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns.

As the Texans move forward in their playoff quest, eyes will be on Johnson's next move in an effort to revitalize his career amid a challenging string of recent events. Will he find a new team quickly, or is this the end of the road for the talented yet troubled receiver? Stay tuned, as this unfolding drama in the NFL could take unexpected turns!
