U.S. Pulls Plug on $600 Million Bird Flu Vaccine Project

In a surprising turn of events, the Trump administration has canceled a high-stakes contract worth nearly $600 million with Moderna, originally aimed at developing a critical vaccine for bird flu in humans. This unexpected move has raised concerns about the nation's pandemic preparedness.

Notably, this cancellation also relinquishes the government's opportunity to secure doses in advance of a potential outbreak, effectively dismantling a comprehensive strategy initiated by the Biden administration earlier this year.

Health Officials Weigh In on Controversial Technology

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) had hinted at a reassessment of the contract earlier this year. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has publicly expressed skepticism about the mRNA technology employed by Moderna, famously used in the COVID-19 vaccines, igniting further controversy.

Andrew Nixon, a spokesman from HHS, remarked, 'After a rigorous review, we concluded that continued investment in Moderna’s H5N1 mRNA vaccine was not scientifically or ethically justifiable.'

Moderna's Response and the State of Bird Flu

In the wake of this announcement, Moderna vowed to pursue alternative pathways for developing vaccines against various flu strains, including those capable of sparking a pandemic.

H5N1, an avian influenza strain, has been wreaking havoc globally, decimating bird populations and even spreading to mammals. Since its arrival in the U.S. in 2022, it has led to the culling of over 173 million birds, devastating the poultry industry. Alarmingly, the virus has also begun affecting cattle, with cases reported in 17 states.
