Shigella Outbreak at Milwaukee School: Everything You Need to Know!
A significant health concern has arisen at La Escuela Fratney, a Milwaukee Public School, as a case of shigellosis—caused by the highly contagious Shigella bacteria—has been reported. The Milwaukee Health Department is currently monitoring the situation, urging both students and staff to remain vigilant.
Shigella infections can lead to severe stomach pain, diarrhea, and fever. Dr. Greg Demuri, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at UW Health, reassured the public that, while shigellosis can be challenging to control, it typically is not deadly for most individuals with healthy immune systems. "It's a concerning situation that requires attention, but there's no need for panic," he stated.
Parents have expressed their worries, with one parent, Elizangela Areizaga, commenting, "I feel nervous but not surprised. After everything with COVID, it seems like we’re just dealing with one health scare after another." Another concerned parent, Jason Schuler, agreed, saying, "I certainly don’t want my child to get sick, but I trust the school’s procedures."
The Milwaukee Health Department notes that Shigella can be transmitted through contaminated food and water or from contact with fecal material. Consequently, robust hygiene practices, particularly proper hand washing, are crucial in preventing the spread of the bacteria. Dr. Demuri advocates for increased cleanliness, especially in areas where young children are changed, emphasizing the need for thorough cleaning to mitigate risks.
In response to the outbreak, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) has stated, "We are adhering to protocols to manage this issue, and to date, no additional infections have been reported." The Health Department is providing guidance to affected individuals and has recommended enhanced hygiene measures. Families are encouraged to practice diligent handwashing and seek medical attention if any symptoms arise.
What is Shigellosis?
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), shigellosis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that results in approximately 450,000 cases in the United States each year. Alarmingly, the rise of antimicrobial-resistant Shigella strains has resulted in about $93 million in direct medical costs annually.
Shigellosis spreads primarily through contaminated food, water, and close contact with infected individuals. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports around 300 to 400 cases of shigellosis each year in the state, with healthcare providers required to report any occurrences within 72 hours.
Symptoms of Shigellosis
Symptoms of shigellosis typically manifest one to two days post-infection and can last up to seven days. Common symptoms include:
- Diarrhea, which may be bloody or prolonged (lasting more than three days) - Fever - Stomach pain - An urgent need to pass stool even when the bowels are empty
As the situation evolves, health officials are conducting investigations and monitoring the outbreak closely. The community is reminded to remain cautious and proactive in maintaining hygiene to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone, especially young children.
