In a shocking move, a sharp critique of President Trump's scientific policies delivered by actor Seth Rogen was mysteriously cut from the coverage of a prestigious science awards show.
Rogen was a presenter at this month's Breakthrough Prize ceremony, often dubbed the "Oscars of science." This extravagant event celebrates remarkable achievements in scientific discovery and boasts high-profile co-founders like Sergey Brin of Google and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta.
During the ceremony, Rogen, alongside fellow actor Edward Norton, presented a special prize in fundamental physics to Gerardus 't Hooft. In his speech, he took a direct jab at what he described as the harmful influence of powerful figures in the room, seemingly alluding to Elon Musk, who was not present. Rogen remarked, "It’s astounding that individuals here underwrote the election of a man who just single-handedly devastated American science in the last week." He further added, "You can destroy tremendous scientific progress with just $320 million and RFK Jr., and do it swiftly."
However, this cutting remark did not make it into the full 99-minute broadcast of the event uploaded on YouTube and the official Breakthrough Prize website.
Responding to inquiries, the Breakthrough Prize foundation explained, "This year’s ceremony lasted longer than previous editions, and we made several edits to fit the original runtime plan."
Trump's ongoing hostility towards the U.S. science community has prompted fierce backlash, including an open letter from 1,900 renowned scientists earlier this year denouncing his administration's threats to universities and funding which have resulted in widespread layoffs and resignations.
Musk's financial backing of Trump's re-election bid—nearly $300 million—further complicates the relationship between tech entrepreneurs and the scientific establishment. Adding to the controversy, Robert Kennedy Jr., a notorious vaccine skeptic, was appointed health secretary and faced criticism for misleading claims about vaccine research.
As the nation observes these developments, Rogen's comments underscore a growing discontent within the scientific community regarding political interference in research and funding.
