In a surprising turn of events, the Houston Astros are shaking up their pitching rotation following the unfortunate injury to Spencer Arrighetti. The right-hander suffered a broken thumb during batting practice when a ball struck him—definitely a fluke injury. Thankfully, Manager Joe Espada confirmed that Arrighetti won’t need surgery but will be wearing a cast for at least two weeks.
With Arrighetti sidelined, the Astros are left scrambling to fill a key spot in their rotation behind established stars Framber Valdez, Hunter Brown, Hayden Wesneski, and Ronel Blanco. Enter rookie sensation Ryan Gusto, who is poised to seize this golden opportunity as he’s been named the probable starter for Saturday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels.
This critical startup marks Gusto’s first-ever foray into the Major Leagues. He was initially set to make his debut at the end of the last season, but that plan was thwarted by a rainout after he was called up to rest Houston’s playoff starters. The delay pushed back Gusto's MLB dreams by six whole months.
Gusto has proven he’s ready for the big leagues, showcasing his skills during Spring Training where he excelled in a relief role. Across four appearances, he pitched a total of eight innings, surrendering just one run and racking up nine strikeouts along with only two walks. Recently, he contributed to the Astros’ thrilling extra-inning victory in Seattle with a solid inning of work and 15 pitches.
Before this promotion, Gusto held his own in Triple-A, making 26 starts out of 29 appearances last season and finishing with an impressive 3.70 ERA and a 22.6% strikeout rate over 148 1/3 innings in the Pacific Coast League. With three days of rest ahead of him, expectations are high as Gusto steps into this pivotal role for the contending Astros.
Can Ryan Gusto rise to the occasion and become the next big pitching asset for Houston? Fans will undoubtedly be on the edge of their seats this Saturday!
