In a move that’s left New Yorkers in disbelief, Rite Aid has announced the closure of all its stores as the drugstore chain files for bankruptcy for the second time this week.

With a staggering 178 locations in New York and 60 in New Jersey, the decision marks the end of an era for many loyal customers who relied on Rite Aid for their pharmacy needs.

Eddie Neuwirth, a West Village resident for 50 years, expressed his sorrow, stating, "I love this store and I'm very disappointed. It was a very good drugstore; they took care of me and were incredibly friendly."

As rumors of the closure circulated, customers, including Garbiela Marin, noticed drastic changes as store shelves ran bare long before the official announcement. "They kept saying they were just 'restocking,' but that never happened. It’s really heartbreaking since it’s one of the few affordable options we have in the West Village," she lamented, highlighting the impact on the community’s elderly residents.

Despite empty shelves in some areas, the pharmacy remained bustling with customers eagerly waiting to pick up their medications.

Store employees reported uncertainty about their future, leaving many anxious about what lies ahead. Rite Aid assures that customers can still access their services, including immunizations and prescriptions, both in-store and online, as talks with potential buyers continue.

The question now remains: what will the closure of these beloved stores mean for their dedicated customers and the communities they served?
