Jack Lilley, a beloved actor and stuntman known for his memorable roles in iconic series and films such as Little House on the Prairie and Blazing Saddles, has sadly passed away at the age of 91.
Born on August 15, 1933, in Santa Clarita, California, Lilley began his journey in the entertainment industry in the late 1940s. His impressive resume includes work on classic Western television series like Gunsmoke, as well as feature films like 1988's Young Guns and the 2011 sci-fi Western Cowboys & Aliens.
Lilley's early career saw him working as a horse wrangler at the Spahn Movie Ranch, where he crossed paths with future cult leader Charles Manson. His breakout moment came when he transitioned to stunt work, earning recognition from legendary director John Ford while filming notable movies such as 1962's The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
In a nostalgic 2015 interview with SCVTV, Lilley recounted a remarkable stunt he performed in 1974’s Blazing Saddles, where his horse slipped on wet wood, leaving director Mel Brooks astounded. "Pardon my English, but Mel Brooks jumped up and went: ‘Holy s***! What was that? I ain't never seen nothing like that in my life,’" Lilley recalled, showcasing the thrill and danger that come with stunt performing.
The news of his passing came from heartfelt tributes, particularly from Melissa Gilbert, the star of Little House on the Prairie. In her moving Instagram post, she expressed her sorrow and shared fond memories of Lilley, who taught her to ride horses during her childhood. She fondly remembered him as one of her dearest friends, stating, "He never said no when I would bound up to him squealing, 'Can we go ride? Please, please, please?'". Her reflections paint a picture of Lilley not just as a talented professional but as a cherished figure in the lives of those he worked with.
Gilbert's tribute resonated with stories of their time working together, reminding fans of the warm camaraderie that existed behind the scenes of the show. She also recalled a serendipitous moment during a pilot she filmed in 2002, where she reconnected with Lilley, reminiscing about their shared history on Little House.
"Jack always felt like home to me. He lived quite a life. I am so lucky that he was my friend," Gilbert wrote, adding a personal touch to her heartfelt goodbye.
