BOSTON — In an intriguing twist during the early season, the Boston Red Sox are shaking up their outfield lineup by giving young infielder Kristian Campbell a chance to prove his versatility in center field—a position he’s more familiar with than originally thought.

Manager Alex Cora announced this weekend that instead of playing left field, Campbell will now take over center field on days he isn't starting at second base. This change comes as the Red Sox aim to optimize their lineup and capitalize on David Hamilton's abilities at second base, especially against right-handed pitchers. In the revised setup, speedy outfield contender Jarren Duran will transition to left field while Campbell stakes his claim in center.

Although Campbell has predominantly been seen at second base during his major league debut, he actually has an established record in center field from his minor league days, where he logged substantial playing time—over 25 games and approximately 204 innings—perfecting his skills in the position. “We’re gonna play (Campbell) in center,” Cora explained. “Just watching Duran play left yesterday, he’s a monster out there. He’s really good. Campbell’s comfortable in center, so it just makes sense.”

Interestingly, Cora admitted that the decision to initially place Campbell in left field was a misstep. After some thoughtful reflection post-game, he realized, “Why are we trying to do this at one of the weirdest left fields in the game? I called K.C. and said, ‘Where do you feel more comfortable, center or left?’ He said center field—and just like that, we could have solved this a month ago!”

Cora highlighted the need to solidify defensive positions on the team, particularly given the challenges posed by Fenway Park's unique layout. “Duran has emerged as a strong fielder in front of the Green Monster,” he added, emphasizing how giving him a consistent position will not only improve team dynamics but also enhance his candidacy for a Gold Glove award.

As for Hamilton, who's been making waves on the field, Cora is keen on making sure he gets the playing time he deserves. “We can’t forget about him,” Cora said. “He impacts the game like no one else on the basepaths; we have to find at-bats for him.” This strategic shift comes in light of Campbell's solid performance so far, even as fellow outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela struggles with a rough batting start.
