Incredible Growth in Traffic Statistics

In an impressive display of connectivity, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) has reported an astonishing surge in traffic during the first quarter of 2025, marking the highest passenger and vehicle crossings since its opening in 2018. Recent statistics reveal that the Zhuhai highway port alone facilitated an overwhelming 7.5 million passenger journeys, showcasing a remarkable 23% increase compared to the same period last year, while vehicle crossings skyrocketed by 31%, reaching a staggering 1.56 million.

Changing Travel Habits and Increased Accessibility

This surge not only highlights the bridge's critical function in enhancing integration within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) but also signals a significant shift in travel habits among residents. The trend has seen a growing number of individuals from Hong Kong and Macao opting to travel north, with over 170,000 drivers and 140,000 vehicles registered at the port, emphasizing a newfound accessibility within the region.

Impact of Policy Changes

Key policy changes have played a pivotal role in fueling this growth. The 'Northbound Travel for Macao Vehicles' policy, which came into effect on January 1, 2023, empowered vehicles with Macao registration plates to access the mainland through the HZMB. This was followed by a similar initiative on July 1, 2023, allowing Hong Kong vehicles to make the crossing. Consequently, the first quarter saw a staggering 880,000 crossings of single-plate vehicles from the two administrative regions, demonstrating a 34% increase year-on-year—the first quarter to surpass 800,000 crossings under these new regulations.
