In a heartfelt response to family concerns, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Sunday that they will be reinstating the iconic No. 21 logo honoring baseball legend Roberto Clemente on the right field wall of PNC Park. This decision comes after it was revealed that the logo had been removed to accommodate an advertisement, much to the dismay of Clemente's family and fans.

Statement from Pirates President

"We did not intend to disrespect the legacy of Roberto Clemente by adding the advertisement," stated Pirates president Travis Williams, who took full responsibility for the oversight. "When we added the advertisement to the pad, it was an honest mistake. We will be adding the No. 21 logo back to the pad."

Family and Fan Reactions

Williams expressed a desire to reassure the Clemente family that their father's legacy is deeply valued. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Clemente family and apologize to them and our fans for our honest mistake,” he added.

The former sign, which had honored Clemente’s name and number since 2022, was unexpectedly replaced with promotional material for Surfside, an alcoholic drink. This decision ignited considerable backlash, underlining the significance of Clemente’s legacy in both the sport and the community.

Roberto Clemente Jr. voiced the family’s disappointment, emphasizing the need for better communication between the Pirates organization and the family regarding matters connected to the legendary ballplayer. “This change was made without any communication or consultation with our family,” he said. He further noted that the enthusiasm and support from fans, both in Pittsburgh and nationwide, highlighted the lasting impact of his father’s contributions both on and off the field.

Clemente's Legacy

Clemente’s illustrious career with the Pirates spanned from 1955 to 1972, earning him 15 All-Star selections, 12 Gold Glove awards, and the 1966 National League MVP title. Tragically, he lost his life in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve in 1972, while on a humanitarian mission to deliver aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. His legacy was solidified with his Hall of Fame induction shortly after his passing.
