In a shocking twist for the Philadelphia Phillies, the team placed both Trea Turner and Alec Bohm on the injured list, raising concerns with just three weeks left in the season. However, there’s a glimmer of hope as the club believes both players could avoid lengthy absences.
Turner, currently enjoying one of the finest seasons of his career, suffered a Grade 1 strain to his right hamstring. Fear not, Phillies fans! Manager Rob Thomson is optimistic that Turner might return even before the regular season wraps up and is definitely aiming for a postseason comeback. "Actually, it was better than what we expected," Thomson stated.
Bohm, on the other hand, has been playing through issues with his left shoulder. The team has decided to give him the necessary time to heal, as he has a cyst that requires draining and will be treated with an injection. Thomson estimated a recovery period of just 10 days for Bohm, who is batting .272 this season but has struggled recently, hitting only .518 OPS over his last 15 games.
With these pivotal players sidelined, the Phillies' infield is looking chaotic. Edmundo Sosa will step in as shortstop, while Bryson Stott is also expected to see playing time at the position. Otto Kemp is taking the lead for regular at-bats at third base, with Weston Wilson poised to contribute at second and third. As a reserve, they’ve called up Donovan Walton, a seasoned journeyman acquired via a minor-league trade earlier this season.
Fortunately, the Phils believe the situation could have been far worse. Turner’s injury occurred during the seventh inning of Sunday’s tough loss to the Marlins, but the organization remains hopeful.
Turner is irreplaceable; his stellar defensive skills and offensive prowess have made him one of the most valuable players in baseball this season. With a 6.6 WAR ranking him fourth in the majors and a jaw-dropping 179 hits leading the National League, he’s also the only qualified NL hitter batting over .300.
Building a lineup without him will be a formidable task for Thomson, who has designated Bryce Harper to lead off in Monday night’s matchup against the New York Mets—a first for Harper since October 2022. By placing Kyle Schwarber second, the hope is that Harper will see a few more good pitches coming his way.
As they entered the game on Monday, the Phillies held a four-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League's second playoff seed. If they secure that spot, they would enjoy a first-round bye, giving Turner over three weeks to recover before the postseason showdown.
Turner has had his share of injuries in the past, missing 11 days with a mild strain in 2017 and 44 days in 2024 due to a more severe injury. Fortunately, those incidents occurred during less critical times in the baseball calendar. But now, with time running out, the Phillies and their fans can only wait and see.
