"Our mission at OpenAI is to make artificial general intelligence beneficial to all of humanity, and part of that is making it as accessible as possible to as many people as we can," Weil stated. With this launch, OpenAI is taking significant strides toward making conversational AI a part of everyday life.

So, how does it work? The phone experience mirrors the Advanced Voice Mode feature that ChatGPT users are already familiar with. Callers can ask questions and receive responses on various topics, and the AI can even assist with language translation – a helpful tool for those wanting to communicate in multiple languages.

To sweeten the deal, OpenAI is offering U.S. callers 15 minutes of free conversation time, after which the call will automatically end. However, standard carrier fees may apply, so users should keep that in mind when planning their calls.

But that's not all! As of the same day, ChatGPT is also available for WhatsApp users. While this version offers a straightforward texting interaction, it lacks some of the customized options found in the official ChatGPT app. There’s no need for an account to experience ChatGPT via WhatsApp; however, users will encounter a daily limit on the number of messages they can send. As they approach this limit, a notification will prompt them to download the ChatGPT app or switch to desktop use for more extensive interactions.

OpenAI is not stopping here. The company is already working on enhancements for the WhatsApp integration, with features like image analysis and web search in the pipeline. However, specific timelines for these updates remain undisclosed.

Interestingly, this initiative originated from a week-long hackathon project led by the OpenAI team. "They built this just a few weeks ago, and we loved it. They hustled really hard to ship it, and it’s awesome to see it here," Weil shared.
