In a shocking move, Nintendo has ramped up its policy against sharing content with fans. Users of the Nintendo Today app have discovered that they can no longer take screenshots or record videos of the promotional material showcased in the app.
Designed as a promotional tool, the Nintendo Today app aims to keep fans updated on the latest games and devices. It features everything from quirky animations to sneak peeks at upcoming titles, like a 21-second clip of Donkey Kong’s hand slap in the highly anticipated Switch 2 game, Donkey Kong Bananza.
You might be excited to share this delightful sneak peek with your friends. Perhaps you think, "I’ve got to send this to James!" Or, even if you don’t know anyone named James, you might want to share a clip on your social media. But hold on—now, when you try to capture that moment, all you'll see is a dreaded black screen.
While users can still capture text-based content, it’s clear that videos are the primary target here. Nintendo’s decision raises eyebrows: if these promotional clips exist solely to generate buzz and drive sales for upcoming games, why the lockdown?
It’s important to remember that these publisher-provided videos and screenshots are advertisements—pure and simple. They aim to build hype and, ultimately, increase sales. Yet, Nintendo does the unexpected: they create an app that primarily serves to push these ads on users, then actively prevent fans from sharing them. It’s baffling!
This behavior fits a long-standing pattern for Nintendo, a company notoriously uncomfortable with sharing. Even footage and trailers that were produced for broad visibility are somehow restricted. Perhaps Nintendo fears that sharing might lead to ‘ideas’—who knows? All we know is, the sharing game is officially off the table!
