Nick Castellanos, once a staple in the Philadelphia Phillies' lineup as their everyday right fielder, now finds himself in a platoon situation with Max Kepler, a shift that highlights the underwhelming performances of both players in 2025. Castellanos, with a long-standing history in Philadelphia, is feeling the impact of this change and isn’t shy about expressing his disappointment.
After the Phillies’ recent 8-2 victory over the Diamondbacks, Castellanos shared his commitment to helping the team capture a World Series ring, downplaying rumors of discontent as a "created narrative." However, he did not hold back when discussing his relationship with manager Rob Thomson, questioning the praise Thomson has received for his communication style.
"Communication over the years has been questionable, at least in my experience... There have been moments where what’s said doesn’t align with actions, leaving me uncertain and confused," said Castellanos candidly. Despite this ongoing frustration, he emphasized the importance of adapting and focusing on the larger goal of winning.
Tensions between Castellanos and Thomson reached a peak during a June 17 game against the Marlins when Castellanos was benched after making what Thomson referred to as an "inappropriate" comment. This decision ended his impressive streak of 236 consecutive games played.
In terms of their current communication, Castellanos cryptically remarked, "I don’t really talk to Rob all that often. I play whenever he tells me to, and sit whenever he tells me to sit." This statement reflects a strained dynamic between the player and manager.
While disputes like this are common in baseball, Castellanos' honesty brings attention to underlying issues within the Phillies’ clubhouse. Despite his frustrations, recent stats show that the platoon system might actually be paying off, as both players have been performing decently since September.
However, Castellanos' overall numbers reveal a more concerning picture. With a wRC+ of only 94 and a .255/.299/.411 slash line this season, it’s clear he hasn’t lived up to expectations since signing a five-year, $100 million contract. The Phillies could be faced with tough decisions this winter regarding his future, particularly since they still owe him $20 million for the 2026 season.
For now, Castellanos is focused solely on the playoffs, refusing to entertain thoughts about his future with the team. "Why would I think about that with what's ahead? That would be selfish and detract from what we’re trying to achieve as a group... I’m here to win," he asserted, reiterating his commitment to the Phillies' success.
